Ventilation air methane is the largest and hardest-to-abate emissions source at underground coal mines, and will expose Australian operators to Safeguard Mechanism liabilities exceeding $100 million a year.

CATCH4 (Catalytic Oxidation of Methane), overseen by Mining3 and commissioned by Low Emission Technology Australia on behalf of 26 coal mines, is commercialising catalytic oxidisers that destroy methane at temperatures well below conventional thermal oxidisers.
