Mining3 launch event

The official launch of Mining3 took place on Wednesday, 16th November in Room Three Sixty at QUT. With well over 100 Mining3 members, staff, government and the mining industry in attendance, the event kicked off with Laurie Hammond, Chair of Mining3. It was followed by Graham Ehm, Executive Vice President, Planning and Technical at AngloGold Ashanti and Dr Geoff Garrett, Queensland Chief Scientist.

The new powerhouse in mining innovation, a partnership between CRCMining and CSIRO Mineral Resources, is set to make its mark both locally and internally. The combined research capability provides Mining3 members with a larger pool of expertise and experience, access to more research projects at various stages of readiness and leveraged research dollars.

In Dr Geoff Garrett’s address, he highlighted the importance of collaboration and accelerating commercialisation. The mining industry is well behind other sectors in the delivery and adoption of new innovation. He believes collaboration is key. By engaging both researchers and the mining industry from idea to product/technology delivery, it mitigates risk and speeds up adoption.

The new partnership is proving to be of interest to mining companies, in particular, who see the value in consolidating R&D budgets under one large research group.

The launch event was followed by the Mining3 Innovation Forum. A plethora of presentations were delivered on the future of mining and research projects underway working towards this vision.
