Challenge

Decisions about post‑mine land and asset use are often constrained by an inability to consistently and credibly express value in monetary terms. While many post‑mine land use options deliver social, environmental and regional benefits, these are frequently difficult to quantify and compare alongside traditional financial metrics. As a result, promising transition options can be undervalued, poorly prioritised, or excluded from decision‑making due to a lack of transparent, defensible valuation approaches. This gap is particularly acute when multiple stakeholders are involved, each with different value drivers, priorities and risk perceptions. 

Solution

This project addressed that gap by developing processes and models to monetise key value drivers within CRC TiME’s post‑mine land use valuation framework. Mining3 reviewed the existing prioritisation and ranking tools, identified where monetary quantification was required, and designed fit‑for‑purpose valuation methods using current best practice. These methods were structured to integrate with the broader multi‑stakeholder framework, enabling post‑mine land use alternatives to be assessed and compared on a consistent economic basis. The resulting toolkit strengthens decision‑making by translating complex post‑mine benefits into clear, comparable monetary estimates, tested and validated using real site data.
