Hydrogen & Green Fuels

The Problem

As mining companies pursue decarbonisation targets, selecting the right energy pathway for mobile equipment has become increasingly complex. Battery-electric, hydrogen fuel cell, hybrid and dynamic charging solutions each offer advantages and limitations depending on mine design, operating requirements, energy infrastructure and business objectives.

While battery-electric technologies continue to gain momentum across the mining industry, some applications remain challenging due to high energy demand, long operating hours, remote operating environments and infrastructure constraints. Mining companies are therefore exploring how alternative energy systems may complement battery-electric fleets and support broader decarbonisation objectives.

The Opportunity

Renewable energy-derived hydrogen and other green fuel-powered mining systems offer an alternative pathway for reducing emissions from heavy-duty mining equipment. By using fuel cells to generate electricity onboard the vehicle, these systems combine the benefits of electric drive systems with the ability to rapidly refuel and operate for extended periods between refuelling events.

Interest in hydrogen and other green fuels is growing across the mining sector as fuel cell technologies mature, renewable production expands and industrial supply chains continue to develop. Green fuels may create opportunities in applications where vehicle utilisation, energy demand or operating conditions make alternative decarbonisation pathways more challenging.

The opportunity extends beyond vehicles themselves. Green fuels have the potential to influence mine energy systems, site infrastructure, logistics networks and broader industrial value chains, particularly in regions seeking to leverage renewable energy resources and develop these industries.

The Benefits

Green fuel-powered mining systems have the potential to provide several advantages:

  • Rapid refuelling, reducing downtime associated with energy replenishment

  • Extended operating range for high-utilisation equipment

  • Reduced dependence on large onboard battery systems

  • Flexible integration across multiple mining and industrial applications

  • Potential alignment with renewable energy and emerging hydrogen supply chains

  • Support for broader mine and regional decarbonisation objectives

Call to Action

Mining companies, logistics operators, technology providers, energy companies and other partners interested in hydrogen and green fuel pathways are invited to work with Mining3 to assess where these technologies can create practical value. Mining3 has developed capability and hands-on experience in adapting, testing and de-risking hydrogen technologies in mining and logistics environments, including through projects such as Hydra and HidroHaul. This experience spans application selection, value proposition development, techno-economic assessment, operational risk, safety, standards and regulatory considerations, helping partners move from early interest to credible deployment pathways.

Talk to Mining3 about your hydrogen and green fuel challenge. We can help frame the opportunity, test the business case, identify the risks and define practical next steps for safe, valuable and scalable implementation.
