Mining3 Appoints Jack Barnes as New Chief Executive Officer

Jack Barnes was appointed CEO of Mining3 on 20 September 2022. He has a keen interest in innovation and research and brings more than 25 years of experience spanning operational, strategic, commercial, and corporate roles.

Mining3 announced today that Jack Barnes has been appointed new CEO of the company, commencing 20 September 2022.

Mining3 Board Chair and Interim Executive Director, Leeanne Bond, said “I’m excited to welcome Jack Barnes, an exceptional leader and relationship builder, to lead Mining3 as we grow in global impact and relevance and help to transform the mining industry. I personally have enjoyed my time as the Interim Executive Director, getting to know at a deeper level our organisation, our members and research partners, and the important work that Mining3 undertakes and the value we bring to the mining sector now and into the future.”

Leeanne will progressively hand over to Jack and will continue to work closely with him as Independent Non-executive Chair of the Mining3 Board.

On his appointment, Jack said “Mining3 has a long and distinguished history of working with industry and academia to help develop and deploy novel mining technologies. I’m excited to join a cutting-edge innovation team and look forward to furthering Mining3’s great legacy, helping our members and research partners innovate to deliver safer, more productive and more sustainable mining.“

Jack is an Australian ex-pat who has worked at the highest levels with Shell in London.

Jack started his career in research and then moved into the oil and gas industry, working in operational and corporate roles in all parts of the business. Jack served on the Shell Australia Leadership Team in several roles including the leader of the post-merger integration of BG-Group in Australia and as VP for the Arrow Joint Venture in Queensland. His most recent role was leading cost efficiency across Shell’s global businesses through the COVID-19 pandemic crisis. His career has taken him around the world, and he has spent most of it living and working overseas. Jack is pleased to return to Australia.

Jack has a First-Class Honours degree in Electrical Engineering from Sydney University and a PhD in Engineering from Cambridge University. Before working in oil and gas, he was a postdoctoral researcher at Cambridge University. He is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining in the UK.
